Yakshagana, some facts you might not know Posted by Hello

There are no rehearsals, no written script and the play goes on anywhere between 2 – 8 hrs without preparation…what makes it interesting is the way the actors try to pull down each other by use of spontaneous self made verses. You can know more here.
This is Mr. Ramachandra Bhat as Indra in the play Mahishsura Mardini staged at Kadi mela, troupe A.S.B.M.G. Yakshagana Kala Mandali, Udupi and the picture is composed by Sudarshan : P

I miss plays. I haven't been to one in some time. Over here, I see a lot of musicals (off Broadway plays). In San Francisco, the Palace of Fine Arts puts on classical dances from around the world every June.

I like the colorful, captured expression.

Really, you guys are more passionate about cultural and regional stuff than those present here (barring a few). You wouldnt believe this, but this was the first time I spent time at the green room...for me, Yakshagana is more than just a play after I took up photography. Thanks

Yakshagana mesmerises me. You are right that they dont rehearse, have written scripts, etc. But they live in a Yakshagana environment. All the metaphors that they use even in daily life are drawn from mythology. Plus, my dad tells me that even when they were growing up, they would do 'aata kunita' in the evenings in their courtyard. It sometimes led to hilarious situations where an articulate person playing a weak character would stump the main character, etc.

I have always wanted to watch Yakshagana, but never had chance. Do you any place in bangalore where they perform?

@Suyog: Thanks. I have posted another one with a different emotion..hope you like it. There are no separate 'make up' staff and the artists adorn themselves. The second picture shows the Mahishasura...he took nearly 4 hours to decorate himself.

@Neels: yeah...i am planning to come down and meet you and all those wonderful bloggers. I do understand your feelings regarding B'lore. Hope you overcome them, soon. Thanks. I shall let you know when i'll be there and maybe you can show the parts of H'ybad which we havent read or know about
@Kishore: Thank you. Its more than a compliment
@Jess: ha ha ha..thanks Jess.
@Viju: You know more about it than I do. Dont you? Thanks
@Vevck: There are plenty of plays taking place here. I'll let you know...or you can contact Havyaka Sanga, Malleshwaram. They organise most of these plays here. You really should spend time at the green room...awesome folks indeed. Thanks.

i've seen a yakshagana show before..but the one i saw was surely playing on a script..
i wish to see one more..that just goes on and on... its a beautiful part of the Kannadiga tradition and culture!
lavannya | Homepage | 03.14.05 - 1:02 pm | #

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

@uber: write ups? Soon, very soon .
@Lavannya: They'll have a very loose script.....but the dialogue delivery is not like regular plays...the 'sootradara' or the 'bhagavatha' will lead the play and for that he needs a definite script but the rest of the actors do it spontaneously. It is a beautiful tradition of south india because it originated in Andhra and records show that people of Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil nadu were also following yakshagana in the 16th century...since its not very popular in these states today, Yakshagana is usually associated with Karnataka.
